Challenge Coins History

Why are they called "challenge coins?"
According to the legend, a wealthy Air Force lieutenant gave birth to the challenge coin when he commissioned the creation of solid bronze coins to recognize the service of each member of his squadron.
It's said that one of the original Air Force pilots placed it in a pouch, which he wore around his neck. The pilot's aircraft was damaged and he was then captured by the Germans behind enemy lines. However, he managed to escape while being transported to a POW camp.
A French patrolman happened by and the pilot offered his challenge coin to provide proof he was an American soldier. The gesture saved his life. When he returned to his squadron, everyone in the unit agreed to carry the challenge coins at all times.
Today, the coin tradition is also popular in the Marines, Army and Navy. The tradition: one must produce his or her coin whenever challenged to do so. If they can't? The next round is on them.
The challenge coin has even gained prominence with U.S. presidents. President Bill Clinton displayed several military challenge coins. President George W. Bush received a Marines challenge coin from a patrol in Iraq.
